• Purpose

  • To give primary informal supports (family/carers) a break, allowing them to recharge, while providing the child with supported care and new experiences.

• What it Offers

  • A safe place to stay (overnight), support with daily living (like personal care), and opportunities to try new activities and meet new people.​

• Benefits for the Child

  • Reduces stress, prevents burnout, and helps families maintain their ability to provide long-term care.

• Not for

  • Holidays, tourism, or intensive skill-building; its main goal is rest and to keep the family care system working.

• Settings

  • Can be in a shared home, a specialised centre, or even at home with additional support.

• Funding

  • Included in NDIS plans if it's a reasonable and necessary support to help the participant reach their goals and maintain informal care. ​
